History, Membership and Competitions

History

The Astley & Tyldesley club was formed in November 1989. Club members raised funds and built the cycle speedway race track at the Astley & Tyldesley Miners’ Welfare Club, Meanley Road, Gin Pit. The track was officially opened in April 1991 by the Mayor of Wigan. The club has continued to improve the track and facilities, to make it the North’s Regional Cycle Speedway Centre and the North West's Cycle Speedway Academy from 2002. The club has also attained "Go-Ride" status for meeting British Cycling's junior rider development criteria and "Clubmark Accreditation" for meeting Sport England's criteria for being a "high quality sports club". The club won the Wigan Sports Club of the Year Award in 2011 and 2015. The Club changed its name from Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club to Astley & Tyldesley Cycling Club, at its AGM in November 2014, to reflect the addition of a ladies road section, with the subsequent addition of an off road section and a road section.
