Gin Pit played host to the final round of the Northern Junior League series
on Sunday 22 September 2002
The Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare / CTA Direct team held a 0.5 point
lead over Bury in the Junior League at the start of the day. Not surprisingly,
it was these two clubs who led the scoring on the day - both teams fielding 10
riders each. A & T dominated the U-13 category, to open up a 40 points lead
over Bury. The Comets hit back in the U-16 category to reduce A & T's lead
on the day to just 7 points. It was a straight head to head between A & T
and Bury in the U-19 and Senior Combination categories. Despite a well taken 16
points maximum by Combination Grand Prix winner Steve Mann for Bury, it was A
& T who extended their lead to win by 20 points on the day, to clinch
the Northern Junior League title by 1.5 points from Bury, who finished
runners-up.
Rob Longworth led the scoring for A & T with a 16 points maximum in the
U-13 category, with all the other riders putting in great performances in each
recording double figure scores. This was A & T's first Northern Junior
League title win since 1997, and their fifth title win in all.
