Sun 11th September | Coventry v Astley & Tyldesley | Coventry | |
Astley & Tyldesley visited Coventry for a Challenge match on Sunday. A & T drafted in new British Champion Terry Norman and his Stoke team mate Garry Pearce, as guest replacements for the Polish duo of Damian Zareba and Remi Burchardt, who were both sacked by the club during the week for breaching several aspects of the club's Code of Conduct. Heavy rain earlier in the week left the Hearsall Common track heavy, but a very sporting and entertaining match took place. Coventry's Polish star Damian Wozny was in superb form as he raced to a 20 points maximum score, whilst Norman enjoyed his return to the scene of his British title win 13 days earlier, by scoring 19 points and losing only to Wozny in heat 13. Pearce and Chris Finnigan both won races for A & T, but Coventry were much stronger in depth and deserved their win. A & T held the home side to 8 points at the interval, but Coventry pulled away in the second half to record a 102-75 win.
