This promotional individual event for mountain bike riders, run in conjunction with Singletrack Mountain Bike magazine turned out to be a great day. Track and weather were ideal, with 20 riders competing. We ran an individual competition with 20 qualifying heats, in which each rider had four races. We then placed the riders into five finals, based on their qualifying scores, with the final placings decided by their placings in the final races. The four riders who reached the 'A' final all received trophies. We did have two ex cycle speedway riders and they took the top two places. 29 years old Trevor Hulton last raced in 1993 and he has just returned from Australia. He was unbeaten in the qualifiers and leading the final, but slowed up as he wanted a genuine mountain biker to win. What he didn't know was that the rider behind him was 50 years old Dave Young, who was also an ex cycle speedway rider, although he last competed 30 years ago! I rode against Dave quite often in the early 1970s when he raced for the sadly defunct CarrsWood club in Gatley, and I was Trevor's first coach at the long defunct Abbey Hey club in Manchester in 1988. Timmy Kershaw impressed again, as did newcomer Steve Kellett.
