Astley & Tyldesley competed in the Northern K.O. Cup at Edinburgh on Saturday. Runners-up for the past two seasons under highly controversial circumstances, A & T's hopes of going one better were dealt a savage blow when Darek Kurkowski was ruled out after breaking a wrist in training. Despite his absence, A & T put in a great display to reach the final, knocking out Stoke and Heckmondwike, with Chris Finnigan and Tomasz Szwajorek leading the way. The final was a close fought affair, with all four teams in close contention throughout. The outcome was effectively decided after a nasty crash on the home straight in heat 12. A & T looked to have secured 3rd place, before a machine failure caused Danny Hughes to fall heavily and bring down Stockport's Paul Ogden. Both riders sustained injuries that ruled them out of the remainder of the weekend. Bury overcame a 6 points deficit in the last five races to pip A & T by 1 point for third place, whilst Sheffield overcame a 2 points deficit to Stockport to retain their trophy.
