Astley & Tyldesley hosted the U-10 British Club Championships at the Gin Pit raceway on Saturday. Sandwell were late withdrawals, leaving eight teams to contest the event, with A & T drawn in the 2nd semi-final. Even by this category's standards, A & T fielded a very young team, and not surprisingly were beaten, but the experience will stand them in good stead for future matches at this level. Adam Watson was A & T's best rider on the day, scoring 10 points, and he capped a fine performance with a hard earned win in his last race, whilst Stefan Whitelegg and Katie Keirl both gave it their all. However, it was a major disappointment that the club could field only three riders, particularly when one considers the numbers of U-10s that regularly attend the Tuesday night training sessions. Wednesfield and Sheffield both qualified comfortably from the 1st Semi-Final. Ipswich were never in danger of not going through from the 2nd Semi-Final, whilst Weymouth saw off Leicester to take the other qualifying spot. Ipswich went on to retain their title, by winning the final, from Wednesfield, Sheffield and Weymouth. The pecking order was quickly established in the final, and their was little doubt as to how the teams would finish up. Ipswich had a solid quintet, with all their riders winning races, the pick of their bunch being Adam Overett and Richard Fellgate. However the two riders on show who most caught the eye were Weymouth's Matthew Mildon and Wednesfield's Matt Haddock, both riders lost just once each all day.
