Sun 16th July | Edinburgh v Astley & Tyldesley | Edinburgh | |
Astley & Tyldesley kept up their Northern Alliance League title bid with a hard fought win at Edinburgh on Sunday. On a blisteringly hot day, A & T suffered an early setback when Tomasz Szwajorek shattered a cog at the start of heat 2, and Edinburgh moved into a 7 points lead after four races. However, Szwajorek teamed up, firstly with Tomasz Wlodarczyk and then with Mike Hack, to record two maximum 7-3 heat wins and put A & T in front by 1 point at the interval. Another 7-3 heat win to Szwajorek and Darek Kurkowski in heat 10 extended A & T's lead, and victory was clinched in the last race when Wlodarczyk and Kurkowski took another 7-3 heat win to make the final score 78-71 in A & T's favour. Wlodarczyk and Kurkowski both raced unbeaten by an opponent, as did Szwajorek after his opening race problem. Back up riders Hack, Mark Taylor and Steve Kellett just did enough to ensure the win. A & T provided the race winner in eleven of the fifteen races, but were always vulnerable with ten last places or non finishes. Gavin Kennedy was excellent for the home team with some fast gating, whilst Chic Mackie impressed in his three races. Edinburgh were bolstered with the inclusion of Craig Newsome, Steve Harvie and Neil McPherson, after their troubles of the previous week. The track was well watered and held up well throughout the match. A very sporting match was well refereed by Alan Hewitson.
