The Edinburgh Falcons Northern League campaign got off to a winning
start at Redbraes Park as the Falcons defeated Astley & Tyldesley by
103 points to 75.
With only two of Astley’s Polish riders able to make the trip to
Edinburgh the Manchester based side were always going to find it
difficult against a full strength Edinburgh with new Team Manager Stevie
Gilroy having to make the unenviable choice of dropping riders to
eventually make up the top eight.
The match started brightly with the scores remaining even over the first
couple of heats before Edinburgh started to pull away as their strength
in depth eventually paid dividends. A total of 14 bonus points for
Edinburgh compared to 2 for Astley & Tyldesley proved the point.
There were no real standouts for Edinburgh as the team was solid
throughout with the ever green Jonny Murphy posting a paid maximum from
reserve. However, special mention must be given to Lee Lawrence who rode
what was arguably his best race in an Edinburgh jersey whilst defeating
Kurkowski in heat 4.
For Astley & Tyldesley, the top two of Kurkowski and Burchardt were
as free scoring as usual with Burchardt’s score dampened by a cut
across Slight in heat 17 which Referee Hewitson was not going to let
pass without an exclusion. As for the remainder, youngsters Jamson and
Dickenson continue to show great improvement and scored well.
