Astley & Tyldesley hosted the last of the three successive Manchester
League Individual Championship nights on Wednesday. 13 riders lined up
for the Senior Individual Final at the smart Gin Pit circuit.
Defending champion Terry Norman started off with a win in heat 2, but
narrowly lost out to Dylan Radcliffe in heat 7. This meant that
Radcliffe and Chris Parish were the two unbeaten riders after heat 8 and
they met in heat 10. Parish raced away to win that race, from Radcliffe,
to put him on 9 points. Norman won back to back races in heats 12 and
13, with Parish and Radcliffe both winning their next race each. Leaders
after heat 16 were: Parish 16, Norman 15, Radcliffe 15. The match had
built up to an exciting conclusion and Radcliffe kept up the pressure by
winning heat 17. The deciding race came in heat 18, with Parish lining
up off gate 1, Norman off gate 4, with Matt Turner and Jake Read lining
up off the middle gates. Parish raced away from the start and despite
four laps of strong pressure from Norman, the Bury rider was fast enough
to hold his lead and complete a 20 points maximum score.
Chris Parish was a deserved winner in taking his first Manchester League
Senior Individual title, with some crisp gating and fast riding. Dylan
Radcliffe warmed up for the forthcoming British U-16 Final on this track
with a well taken 2nd place, ahead of Terry Norman, who suffered just
two narrow defeats all night. These three riders dominated proceedings,
but there were plenty of good performances from the rest of the field in
what was a very competitive match. Curiously, both Parish and Norman
recorded the fastest time of the night, 44.02 seconds, when winning
heats 1 and 12 respectively.
