Astley & Tyldesley staged the annual Club Individual Championships under
the Gin Pit floodlights on Tuesday evening. As always, a flexible format
was followed to cater for the age, experience and ability range of
riders entering on the night. Plenty of good keen racing took place on a
fast, grippy track on a crisp evening, as many of the youngsters
revelled in the opportunity to demonstrate how much they have improved
this season.
The u-8 and u-10 categories were combined for the first match of the
evening, with 9 riders contesting 12 heats. U-10 rider Adam Turnbull
raced to a 16 points maximum score and he recorded the two fastest times
of the match. U-8 rider Max Evans dropped just one point, to finish on
15, with u-10 rider Ross Green scoring 14 and u-8 rider Tyler Koch next
up on 13. Six year old Thomas Whitwam was the third highest scoring u-8
rider with 11 points.

The older categories were combined for the second match of the evening,
with 11 riders contesting 19 heats. U-13 riders Adam Phillips and Joel
Partington were impressive throughout and these two unbeaten riders
clashed in heat 15. Phillips made a fast start from grid 4 to take the
lead, but Partington gradually reeled him in to close the gap on the
last lap. Phillips just held on to win, as both riders had to be careful
to avoid a collision as they lapped Jamie Sinclair at the finish line.
Both riders won their last race, as Phillips completed a 20 points
maximum score to win the u-13 and Open categories, with Partington
runner-up in both on 19. U-16 rider Sacha Street took third place
overall with 18 points. He took an important win in heat 13 after race
leader Reece Pollitt fell on the second lap. Pollitt went on to score 16
points and he defeated Stefan Whitelegg in a run-off for 3rd place in
the u-13 category. U-19 rider Matthew Turnbull put in a good showing to
score 15 points, the same as impressive youngster Max Evans. Fastest
time was recorded by Adam Phillips, 46.18 secs in heat 17.
