Astley & Tyldesley took on Sheffield in a Northern Combination League
double header event at the Cookson Park track in Sheffield on Sunday.
Ridden in blustery conditions, two very entertaining matches took place,
with plenty of good racing on the wide, banked track.
A & T lined up against the Sheffield Raiders in the first match, on a
heavy track. A & T took the lead in heat 2 when Beccy and Roy Heslop
took a 7-3 over Niall and Luke Morton, after Luke had fallen. Sheffield
immediately hit back with a 7-3 to Richard Hudson and debutant Matt
Parrott over Joel Partington and Max Evans. A run of 5-5s followed,
before a Reece Pollitt / Ron Makin 6-4 over Luke and Niall Morton gave A
& T an interval lead. The second half saw Sheffield come out stronger
and two quick 7-3s put them 6 points ahead. A 6-4 to Partington / Evans
over Niall and Ed Morton reduced the gap to 4 points. Sheffield went
into the last heat holding a 4 points lead. A very slow tactical race
took place with Hudson at the front, trying to get his partner Kyle
Holland through. Partington burst round on the outside on the last bend,
only to be taken off the track by Holland, with no action from the
referee.
The last race aside, this was a very good match, as both teams gave it
their all and provided plenty of good racing. A & T edged the first
half, but Sheffield's superior fitness showed in the second half and
they ran out worthy winners on the day. Richard Hudson and Rob Mawhood
both raced unbeaten in their races. A & T's older quintet all rode well
and were in the points.
