Astley & Tyldesley returned to Northern Combination League action with a
short trip to take on the league leaders, Bury. The match started with
two shared races, before Bury took two successive heat wins to move into
a 6 points lead after 4 heats. Another 7-3 heat win in heat 7 put them
10 points up. A & T held their own after that, but couldn't make in
roads on the deficit and Bury ran out 81-69 winners, to preserve their
unbeaten record so far this season.
Adam Phillips made a welcome return to the team and his gating was
impressive, losing only to Will Owens in heat 3 and Joe Allen in heat
12. Reece Pollitt recorded four second places, with Ron Makin and Roy
Heslop displaying good team riding in supporting their race partners.
Matt Snell and Stefan Whitelegg both tried hard in their races, with
Matt beating a home rider on two occasions. Former A & T rider Joe Allen
raced unbeaten for the home team, with strong support from Ryan Livesey
and Will Owens. Bury provided twelve of the fifteen race winners and
this proved decisive, despite plenty of good team work by A & T in
packing the minor places in many races.
