Astley & Tyldesley hosted Round 4 of the Manchester League Grand Prix
series at Gin Pit on Wednesday. Numbers competing were down on previous
rounds, but some good racing took place on a damp, grippy track.
The evening started off on a sombre note, as a minute's silence was held
in memory of former A & T rider and St. John's Ambulance cadet, Ben
Keen, who had been killed the day before in a motor cycle accident.
Callum Maguire and Max Evans both raced unbeaten in the U-10s match,
this being notable for Callum's first maximum score, which included some
impressive passing. Matt Snell chipped in with a useful 10 points and
young Manisha Waterworth gallantly finished each race against older
opposition. Daniel Burns put in a game performance against more
experienced opposition in the U-13s category. Joel Partington and Reece
Pollitt demonstrated their continued improvement with some fast racing
and good scores in the U-16s event. These performances were good enough
to give A & T a narrow win on the night, finishing 4 points clear of
Bury and 8 points clear of Stockport. The latter team's challenge was
hindered when Joe Pickford withdrew due to an injured leg, after falling
awkwardly when clipping Reece Pollitt's back wheel in his third ride in
the U-16s match. With two rounds remaining in this series, A & T are in
a strong position to win this competition for the first time since 2009.

top scored, dropping his only point to team mate Jack Lush, who won in
the fastest time of the night, 43.20 seconds. Ron Makin and debutant
Steve Waterworth battled gamely for A & T, but Luke Jamson arrived too
late to compete.
