Astley & Tyldesley hosted Round 3 of the Northern
Fours & Junior League series at Gin Pit on Sunday. Despite much heavy
rain in the week leading up to the match, the track's famed drainage
system had once again done its job, resulting in a grippy, but slightly
soft surface.
A & T riders dominated the U-10 match, taking the first four places on
the day. Max Evans rode to a comfortable 16 points maximum score. Tom
Whitwam put in his usual determined performance, dropping just two
points to Max. Matt Snell and young Jack Robinson both won a race each,
with Ben Robinson and John White putting in plenty of effort in their
races. Daniel Burns continued his steady improvement with a race win in
the U-13 match, with Matthew Sweeney gaining valuable experience at this
level of racing. Reece Pollitt arrived too late to be included in the
U-16 match, but impressed in the U-19 and Combination match. He won his
opening three races, before finishing second to Bury's Will Owens, who
he had beaten in an earlier race.
Once again, an impressive day's racing by the A & T youngsters, as they
reap the rewards of the effort put in at training sessions and at
matches. However, Bury had more riders who turned out on the day and
they took the overall win in the Northern Junior League match, with A &
T second.

The Northern Fours League match quickly turned into a two horse race
between Bury and Stockport. Mike Hewitson won heat 1 in the fastest time
of the day, 43.63 secs, as Bury held a slight advantage for most of the
match. They looked safe going into the last race, with top rider Chris
Parish on gate 1 and holding a 2 points advantage. However, Stockport's
Jack Lush had other ideas and he pulled off a great pass on Parish on
the third lap, diving inside him. Heckmondwike's Darren Kent though was
alert to the move and he cut back inside to take the lead and although
Lush held on to beat Parish into second place, it was Bury who took the
overall win, by 1 point from Stockport.
