Sun 30th Sept Transpennine Grand Prix Round 8 Astley & Tyldesley

Astley & Tyldesley hosted the 8th and final round of the Transpennine Grand Prix series at Gin Pit on Sunday. The track was in excellent condition, considering the amount of heavy rain in the preceding week. Unfortunately, it rained throughout the match, but the famed Gin Pit drainage system coped well, even if the rain inevitably made conditions unpleasant for the riders.

This individual competition comprises ten categories, so some of the categories were combined for racing purposes, with the scores adjusted retrospectively, so that only riders' scores against their own age group counted.

A & T fielded three newcomers in the U-8/ U-10 event and Rhys Burgess, Ashton Semtyshin and McKenzie Firth can all be well pleased with their efforts. A & T's Max Evans raced unbeaten in the U-10s category and clinched the overall series title with a total of 112, finishing 19 points clear of his nearest rival and amassing the highest individual points score in all ten categories. Matt Snell's score of 12 points was more than good enough for him to finish 3rd overall in the U-10 series. Young John White turned in a great performance, dropping just one point in the U-8 category.

Alexandra Semtyshin made her debut for A & T in the U-12/ U-14 event and acquited herself well. A & T's Reece Pollitt was in great form in the U-14 category, dropping only one point and recording the fastest time of the match, 46.12 seconds, when winning heat 3. Reece finished 3rd overall in the U-14 series. Daniel Burns was also in good form and he dropped just one point to another U-12 rider.

Ron Makin was A & T's lone rider in the U-16/Girls/U-18/Veterans match, with no Combination or Senior riders present. Racing in the Veterans category, Ron scored 13 points, as Heckmondwike's Darren Kent raced to a 16 points maximum score. This put both riders on a series total of 48 points and tieing for 1st place overall in the Veterans category.
