A Max for Max sees him Champion of the North. Seven Astley and Tyldesley riders made the journey over the Pennines to compete in the Northern Individual Finals at Hull on Sunday. In the u-10s Charlie Burgess, John White and Joe Quarmby were on fine form for Team Green. Charlie Burgess raced hard from a tricky draw to pick up 14 points for his efforts. John and Joe, both fancied for the title, also picked out tricky outside gates to the fierce Sheffield contingent. Heat 3 proved to be a decider when John White dropped his only points to eventual winner, Jack Brownell of Sheffield, when starting from outside him. Joe would eventually make it to a run off for 3rd place, but would draw gate three from 3 riders! A great ride would see him get 2nd in the 'run off', to finish in 4th place overall. Final Points: John White 19, Joe Quarmby 17, Charlie Burgess 14. The under 13s saw Emily Burgess and Max Evans ride for Team Green. Emily, being the youngest and only girl turned in a fabulous set of results picking up a terrific win in heat 3 against tough opposition. At the sharp end Max had drawn two grid 4s and this against the only other unbeaten rider. Heat 9 would turn out to be the decider as Max pressured Stockport's Michael Preston for the whole race and passed him at the end of lap 3. This would prove crucial overall and Max went on to score the only 20 points maximum and become U-13s Northern Individual Champion. Final Points: Max Evans 20 (Maximum), Emily Burgess 13. Reece Pollitt raced to two wins in the U-19s class, but a gate exclusion in his 2nd race would crucially drop him down the results and out of a top three placing. Final Points: 11. Mark Mulvey was the lone adult rider to represent Astley and Tyldesley in the Veterans Class. Two firsts, a second and a third saw Mark bring home 13 points, just missing out on a rostrum placing. A little more luck from a Northumbria crash could have seen him higher. Final Points: 13. All in all, a great day in Hull for the fabulous Team Green Cycle Speedway riders, with the A&T club providing yet another champion, this time in Max Evans! |
