27th, 28th, and 29th July European Individuals Czestochowa and Poczesna
Poland

13 British based members of the Astley & Tyldesley club arrived in Poland for the European Championships weekend at Czestochowa and Poczesna. The 6 members of the Evans family were stranded for four days in London after a costly vehicle breakdown, whilst Reece Pollitt’s late passport application ruled him out of the trip as well.

A mix of baking hot sunshine, with temperatures reaching 37C, along with thunderstorms and torrential rain, was the weather throughout the weekend. The party had a great time throughout, meeting up with old friends and making plenty of new ones.

Ciaran Collins was eliminated from the Junior Individuals at the Semi-final stage at Poczesna, after racing in the Qualifier and Repechage at the same track. Mick Knowles exited the Veterans Individuals at the Qualifier stage at Czestochowa, but Paul Graham and Steve Harris both progressed. In the Final at Poczesna, Paul scored 9 points, to finish 12th, whilst Steve scored 16, to finish 5th overall after coming 3rd in a 3 man tun-off for 3rd place. In the Womens Final at Poczesna, Emily Burgess was the youngest rider in the field. She started off with two wins, but a last bend fall, whilst leading her third ride put paid to her title hopes and she finished 7th, after scoring 14 points. In the Senior Individuals, Marcin Jakubiak was a non starter in the Polish Eliminator, Mick Knowles went out from his Qualifier, whilst Steve Harris was eliminated at the Repechage stage at Czestochowa, after racing in the Qualifier. Tomasz Wlodarczyk reached the Semi-Finals, but was forced out midway, due to a broken foot. Kamil Bielica rode brilliantly throughout the rounds, to reach the Senior Final, where he scored 14 points and finished in 6th place. He was in contention for a rostrum place, before finishing 4th in his final ride.

Emily Burgess was selected to race for the England team in the European Junior Nations Cup at Czestochowa and she put in a typically spirited performance to score 9 points, plus 1 bonus, from 6 rides. She was the youngest rider and only female in the match. England finished in 2nd place, behind Poland, but ahead of Wales Select. Ciaran Collins raced for Ireland in the European Nations Cup at Czestochowa and he rode brilliantly throughout, on the pace with Europe’s top racers. Ciaran top scored for Ireland, with 7 points, as they finished 4th, behind Poland, England and Wales respectively.

Mike Hack refereed 6 matches over the weekend, including the Senior Nations Cup and Veterans Final. Przemek Binkowski was the referee for the Women’s Final.
