Astley
& Tyldesley cycle speedway racer Becky Heslop was in excellent form when she
made her debut for Gt. Britain juniors against the U.S.A. juniors at Prescott
Valley, Arizona. Fred Longworth High School pupil Becky, along with Leicester
rider Lucy Whitehead, jointly made cycle speedway history by becoming the first
female riders to race for Gt. Britain at international level. Not satisfied with
this, Becky finished the match as top individual points scorer from either side,
scoring 16 points plus 1 bonus, out of a possible 20, as Gt. Britain raced to a
comfortable 101 - 79 victory, in the U-13 international. And in another top
performance, two days later, Becky's 17 points total saw her finish in 4th place
out of a total of 24 riders in the Junior Individual Championship that took
place, featuring the pick of the American and British riders.
Any
youngsters wishing to try to follow in Becky Heslop's tyre tracks are welcome to
come to a free trial at the Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club. Practice
sessions are held every Tuesday evening, starting at 7 pm, at the Astley &
Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Club, Meanley Road, Gin Pit, Astley.
