George Hughes Retires From Cycle Speedway

Former A&T captain George Hughes has announced his retirement. The vastly experienced 56 year old A&T racer suffered a heart attack in the match at Northumbria in September. Following further medical tests and advice, George has reluctantly taken the decision to hang up his racing wheels for good.

Hughes started his racing career at Stoke in 1976 and has since raced for CarrsWood, Stockport and East London, as well as three spells with Astley & Tyldesley. George's immense contribution to the team over the years is shown in him being second in the A&T all time list of appearances and third in the A&T all time list of points scorers. He was also club captain and junior team manager in the 1990's.

George is pictured racing during the 2014 season in A&T colours.
