History, Membership and Competitions

The Astley & Tyldesley club was formed in November 1989. Club members raised funds and built the cycle speedway race track at the Astley & Tyldesley Miners’ Welfare Club, Meanley Road, Gin Pit. The track was officially opened in April 1991 by the Mayor of Wigan. The club has continued to improve the track and facilities, to make it the North’s Regional Cycle Speedway Centre and the North West's Cycle Speedway Academy from 2002. The club has also attained "Go-Ride" status for meeting British Cycling's junior rider development criteria and "Clubmark Accreditation" for meeting Sport England's criteria for being a "high quality sports club". The club won the Wigan Sports Club of the Year Award in 2011 and 2015. The Club changed its name from Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club to Astley & Tyldesley Cycling Club, at its AGM in November 2014, to reflect the addition of a ladies road section, with the subsequent addition of an off road section and a road section.

The Astley & Tyldesley club is affiliated to British Cycling, Wigan Borough Sports Council, Sport Leigh and Wigan & Leigh Council for Voluntary Service. We are a Go-Ride and Clubmark accredited Club.

Throughout our brief history, the club has continued to recruit as many new riders as possible, to add to our tally of having produced eighteen British Cycle Speedway Champions in the club, as well as winning the 1997 British U-16 Team Championship. Races, training and competitions are organised to cater for riders of all ages and abilities, during the outdoor season which runs from March to October. Members will also be able to participate at occasional indoor events held during the winter months.

Club Nights

The club organises weekly club cycle speedway training nights, held on Tuesdays at 5.30 pm, from February to October. The sessions are open to all interested casual and regular riders at the Gin Pit track. Bikes and helmets are available for use by participants, with tuition provided by the club’s coaches. There is a charge of £4.00 per week per rider. Prior booking is required for groups.

Bikes, helmets and gloves are available from the club for use by new riders. Club race jerseys, race trousers and race gloves are to be provided by the competitors themselves.

An annual fee of £80 is payable for cycle speedway members. This includes one adult membership of the Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Club. Subsequent family members pay an annual fee of £50 membership. Alternatively, members may pay at a rate of £4.00 per week. Leisure or non racing members pay an annual fee of £15.
