Sun 11th August Northern Junior and Fours League Round 5 Stockport

Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare / CTA Direct Cycle Speedway Club were in action on Sunday in Round 5 of the Northern Fours and Junior League series. A late switch saw the racing take place at Stockport, due to the continuing poor state of the Tameside track.

A & T started the day as leaders of the Northern Junior League, but had several riders unavailable for various reasons. However, the A & T riders who did turn out were all in inspired form. In the U-13 category, Becky Heslop won all four of her races to take the overall lead in the U-13 Grand Prix series. David Greenough enjoyed his best match to date, winning three races, with another tigerish performance from John Nuttall and a solid score from Chris Heslop. Przemek Binkowski raced unbeaten in the U-19 event, twice beating team mate Damien Hack, who was unbeaten by an opponent. So, a really tremendous performance from a small squad saw Astley & Tyldesley win the match overall to extend their lead at the top of the table, with two rounds remaining.

Northern Junior League Round 5 score:

Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare / CTA Direct 84 Bury 73 Sheffield 70 Hull 62 Tameside 24 Heckmondwike 0 Stoke 0.

Astley & Tyldesley scorers:

Becky Heslop 16, Przemek Binkowski 16, David Greenough 14, John Nuttall 14, Damien Hack 14, Chris Heslop 10.

The rain came down for the Northern Senior Fours League match, making the starts and corners extremely greasy and slippery. A & T were up against league leaders Bury, but another great performance by A & T's two Polish riders Tomasz Wlodarczyk and Przemek Binkowski saw Team Green push them all the way. Binkowski set the scene with a great ride to pass Bury's Paul Dyson to win heat 1 and then recover 2nd next time out after spinning badly at the start. He won his other two races, with Wlodarczyk unaffected by the conditions to win all his four races from the start for a tremendous maximum. Damien Hack had a nightmare match, falling twice and spinning badly on the starts. A & T finished just 5 points behind Bury, despite the non-arrival of Steve Mills, which undoubtedly cost the Gin Pit side a surprise victory.

Northern Fours League match score:

Bury 54 Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare / CTA Direct 49 Stockport 39 Stoke 0.

Astley & Tyldesley scorers:

Tomasz Wlodarczyk 16, Przemek Binkowski 15, Damien Hack 10, John Nuttall 8.
