Sunday ended with the hastily scheduled Northern Junior K.O. Cup Semi-Final
tie between A & T and Sheffield. A & T took to the track with just four
riders, and Sheffield quickly took control of the match. Twice the match was
interrupted due to heavy showers, but smart work by the home club quickly had
the track fit for racing. At this stage, three of the home team withdrew from
the match, leaving Matt Winston to face Sheffield on his own. Consequently, A
& T fell to their worst ever defeat in their history at any level of
competition, with Lee Harper sacked by the club for his involvement in inciting
the other riders to quit racing. For A & T, only Matt Winston emerged from
this match with his credibility intact. For the record, Simon Gamble, Richard
Bowler and Jonathan Birks all raced unbeaten for Sheffield, with the visitors
commenting on the excellent condition of the Gin Pit circuit.
