Astley & Tyldesley made the long trip to Edinburgh for a Northern League
match against Scotia on Sunday. A well prepared track on a fine day greeted the
teams and a sporting but competitive match took place.
The first two races were drawn, before Scotia took two maximum heat wins to
take control of the match. A & T's Polish star Przemek Binkowski was again
in brilliant form, and he pulled off the ride of the day when passing both Alan
Smith and Alan Mackie to win heat 10, on his way to another 20 points maximum
score. Veteran Mike Hack combined well with his younger team partners to ensure
that points were shared in his races, with Warren Mee and Jeff Radcliffe both
turning in encouraging performances against much more experienced opposition.
For a solid scoring Scotia team, Craig Newsome, Alan Mackie and Alan Smith
turned in true heat leaders performances, with good support from the rest of the
team, as they went on to record a deserved 84-64 win. The match was well handled
by referee Alan Hewitson, and a fine afternoon was concluded with a buffet
provided by the home club in the nearby clubhouse afterwards.
