Astley & Tyldesley hosted the 3rd and final National
Round of the Cusack British Youth & Junior League series at Gin Pit on
Saturday. A marathon event saw 92 riders contest 6 age categories over 124
races, with the racing starting at 12 noon and finishing at 9 pm! And there was
joy for Astley & Tyldesley with a new British Champion within the club.
Becky Heslop started the day as leader of the U-14 Grand
Prix series, and she scored 14 points in her qualifying round to put her in the
'A' Final. In the Final, she finished in 2nd place behind Ipswich's Josh Brook,
but crucially ahead of her closest rival, Sam Wyatt of Exeter, and this result
clinched the British U-14 Grand Prix title for her. This is Becky's first
British title, having previously been runner-up and third placed last season in
British U-13 Finals. She is also the first female rider ever to win a British
Grand Prix title, and A & T's first British Champion since 1997.
Dylan Radcliffe scored 13 points in his qualifying match
and this put him in the U-10 Grand Prix 'A' Final. A great performance by him
saw him take 3rd place in the Final and this moved him up to overall 3rd place
in the British U-10 Grand Prix series.
An excellent showing by Warren Mee saw him score 12 points
in the U-16 match and he then took 2nd place in the 'C' Final. Ellie Radcliffe
scored 6 points in the U-8 match and finished 3rd in the 'C' Final.
