Sun 10th April Astley & Tyldesley v Bury Astley & Tyldesley

Astley & Tyldesley entertained local rivals Bury in a Midlands / North League Division 1 match at Gin Pit on Sunday. The visitors were strengthened with the inclusion of secondary registration riders from Tameside, Steve Ward and Chris Eaton, whilst A & T were once again missing Frank Finnigan, due to business commitments.

A & T riders won the first four heats, but Bury packed the minor places to share the points. Bury moved ahead with 7-3 and 6-4 heat wins, before a decisive heat 7. A & T captain Damian Zareba tried to combine with teammate Tom Hall for a 7-3, but after a hard fought two laps with Fred Rothwell and Neil Howarth, Zareba was excluded and Bury took a 7-2 in the re-run to put them firmly in command. Bury's Paul Dyson fell in heat 12 and brought down Hall, but to A & T's dismay the referee ordered a re-run with all four riders, and with it the likelihood of a 7-2 heat win to put them back in the match had gone. Bury were then content to sit on their lead to run out convincing 97-81 winners.

A & T had three top scoring riders on show. European Junior Champion Remi Burchardt once again raced unbeaten, and recorded the fastest time of the day, 42.26 secs, when winning heat 2. European Champion Damian Zareba was also unbeaten, apart from his exclusion. Chris Finnigan won three races and lost only to Chris Eaton in heat 6 and Ben Scranage in heat 16. However, Bury's tactics worked perfectly in packing the minor places when A & T's top three racers were out and scoring three maximum 7-3 heat wins in the three races they weren't out. Veteran John Whiting was unbeaten in his two races, with all Bury's team scoring solidly. The fact that A & T provided 12 race winners but had 16 last places in the 18 heats tells its own story.
