Sat 17th September British U16 Team Championship Astley & Tyldesley

Astley & Tyldesley hosted the U-16 British Team Championships at Gin Pit on Saturday. A great day's racing took place, on a track that held up superbly throughout all 70 races held. The Mayor and Mayoress of Wigan, Councillors Brian and Barbara Jarvis, were present at the event.

Ipswich, Leicester and Hethersett were the three teams that progressed from the first semi-final to the final. A & T were in the second semi-final, but their inexperienced team, consisting of two newcomers and two U-13 riders, was eliminated. Warren Mee won two races for A & T. Sandwell, Newport and Bury were the three teams that made it to the final.

Sandwell were the pre-match favourites to win, despite never having taken the trophy before. However, they got off to a bad start with a last place in the opening race. That, though, was their only last place, and they quickly stamped their authority on the match. They led by 4 points after heat 12 and pulled away to win by the convincing margin of 11 points. Jamie Ball led the way with a maximum score, and solid support from the rest. Hethersett were tailed off at the back, but there was a real battle amongst the other four teams to finish in the top three placings. Eventually, Ipswich pulled clear to take second, whilst defending champions Newport overhauled Leicester in the very last heat to take third.

Medals were presented to all six finalists and the referee by Ivor Armstrong, Chairman of British Cycling's North West Division.
