Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare Club were in action in the 2nd Round of the Northern Fours & Junior League series at Sheffield on Sunday.

A & T made it three straight wins in the Fours League with a resounding win over Tameside, Sheffield and Pedalsport (effectively Bury 'B'). Damian Zareba and Remi Burchardt both raced to untroubled maximum scores, with Chris Finnigan and comeback racer Danny Hughes both recording two wins each. Hughes rode superbly and was unlucky to drop points when falling on the last lap of heat 2, after heavy pressure from Jono Birks. Veteran Martin Gamble made light of a very slippery track to top score for the home team.

A & T had a good turn-out of riders for the Junior League match. Under normal circumstances, a score of 137 points would be sufficient for victory. However, Sheffield had a tremendous turn-out of riders and amassed a score of 212 - just reward for their recruitment policies. European Junior Champion Remi Burchardt raced unbeaten in the U-19 category, with excellent scores from the rest of the A & T squad. This result means that leadership in the league is jointly held by A & T, Bury and Sheffield.
