Astley & Tyldesley opened their 2011 cycle speedway season, by hosting
the opening North Regional round of the Wosskow Brown British Youth &
Junior League series at Gin Pit on Saturday.
There were some good performances recorded by A & T's youngsters. 6
years old Thomas Whitwam not only won the U-8 Grand Prix Final, but beat
several U-10 riders in the qualifying heats. Adam Turnbull won all his
four qualifying races, before taking victory in the U-10 Grand Prix
Final, with Max Evans taking 2nd place in that event. Both Adam and Max
beat their personal best times as well. Reece Pollitt finished 3rd in
the U-14 Grand Prix Final, whilst Bethan Braithwaite took 2nd place in
the Girls Grand Prix B Final.
Thomas Whitwam of A & T was the only the U-8 rider present. A & T's Adam
Turnbull won all his four qualifying races, before taking victory in the
U-10 Grand Prix Final. Bury's James Elston performed the same feat in
the U-12 Grand Prix to score 16 points and win the A Final. Just five
riders contested a hard fought U-14 category, with the riders all taking
points off each other, before Sheffield's Kyle Holland won the Grand
Prix Final. Sheffield's Sandra Tamborska raced unbeaten in the Girls
qualifying heats, but it was her Sheffield clubmate Laura Watson who
took the win in the Grand Prix Final. In the U-16 category, Stockport's
Ali Lam top scored with 14 points, but was pipped by his Stockport team
mate Jack Lush in the Grand Prix A Final. Sheffield's Aiden Owen
received a yellow card in this match for abusive language. Sheffield's
Liam Webster was the sole entrant for the U-18 category.
Sheffield took the wins in both the Junior Team event and the Youth Team
event.
