Sun 7th Sept | Northumbria v Astley & Tyldesley | Northumbria | |
Astley & Tyldesley made the long trip to the impressive new track at Cramlington on Sunday, for a Northern League fixture. A&T had a whole host of senior riders missing, for various reasons. However, the patched up side put up a great effort in the Division 1 match and narrowly missed recording a first ever win against Northumbria. The first five heats were all drawn, before Gavin Parr pulled off a fine pass to beat Tomasz Wlodarczyk in heat 6, with Dan Redshaw taking 3rd place. A&T hit back in heat 8, with a well worked 7-3 by the Paul Graham / Przemek Binkowski pairing over Jason Keith, to take the lead, but a 6-4 to G. Parr/ Andy Knowles over Wlodarczyk levelled the scores at the break. Redshaw rounded Ciaran Collins to win heat 10, with Keith Oldham third, for Northumbria to regain the lead. Four drawn heats followed, before a hard fought 6-4 to the Keith / Knowles pairing over George Hughes and Max Evans extended the home team's lead to 4 points. Two more shared heats meant the A&T needed a last heat 7-3 to draw. Keith pulled out a fast start from 2 to gate over Graham and take the race win, for another shared heat, with Reece Pollitt third. A&T's long serving Polish riders, Przemek Binkowski and Tomasz Wlodarczyk, made their first appearances of the season and they were in great form, losing only to Gavin Parr. Binkowski inflicted Parr's only defeat of the day, in heat 16. Reece Pollitt impressed with some excellent gating, losing only to Parr first time out and to Keith in the last heat, with strong support from Paul Graham. Youngsters Ciaran Collins and Max Evans were always in the thick of the action, as were George Hughes and newcomer Gareth Paine. 13 of the 18 heats were shared, but Northumbria took four 6-4 heat wins to A&T's one 7-3 heat win. In a very close and sporting match, Northumbria rode as a more solid unit, recording just four last places, with Gavin Parr in excellent form, whilst A&T had eleven race winners but fourteen last places. Our best wishes go to George for a full and speedy recovery. When the Division 2 match eventually got underway, A&T's youngsters got off to a great start, winning four of the opening five races with a maximum 7-3 scoreline.
