Sun 20th April | Astley & Tyldesley v Edinburgh | Astley & Tyldesley | |
Astley & Tyldesley welcomed the Edinburgh Falcons for a Northern League meeting at Gin Pit . Very strong winds all afternoon, blowing down the home straight, quickly nullified the pre-match track watering that had taken place, leaving the track dry and slippery. Full credit to all riders who got on with the racing in difficult conditions. Two of the opening three heats were shared, but Edinburgh took a grip on the match, with a 7-2 to the Neil Swanson / Mikey Hewitson pairing over Ron Makin, after Reece Pollitt was excluded at the gate. Danny Hughes pulled off a fine pass on Kamil Greszla in heat 6 to take the lead, but the race was stopped a lap later after George Hughes stayed down after taking a heavy fall. Greszla held on to win the re-run as a 6-3 extended the visitors' lead to 10 points. A 6-4 to the Douglas Morgan / Jake Slight pairing over D. Hughes / Makin put Edinburgh 12 points ahead at the interval. Gate exclusions to G. Hughes and Lee Lawrence in heats 10 and 11 cancelled each other out as their team's subsequently conceded a 7-2 in the re-run. There was a run of drawn heats, before Edinburgh finished off with three heat wins, as Pollitt picked up his second gate exclusion of the match in heat 17 and Joe Allen was a non finisher in the last race. A solid scoring Edinburgh side fully deserved their win, showing good team work throughout. Mikey Hewitson was fast away from the tapes in every race, on his way to an unbeaten score. Luke Jamson was best for A&T, losing only to Kamil Greszla and Hewitson, with his best support coming from Danny Hughes. Northern League Division 1 match result Astley & Tyldesley 78 Edinburgh 96 A&T: Luke Jamson 17 (1), Danny Hughes 15 (1), Joe Allen 12 (2), Lee Phillips 10 (1), Reece Pollitt 10, George Hughes 6, Ron Makin 4, Ciaran Collins 4. A much more experienced Edinburgh team ran out easy winners over a largely young Astley & Tyldesley side in the Division 2 match. Reece Pollitt offered the most resistance, losing only to Mark Lee in heat 10. Pollitt gained his revenge after Lee was excluded in heat 13, when the two riders clashed. Once again, Edinburgh were solid scoring, right through the team line-up and after taking three 7-3s in the opening four races, the result was never in doubt. Ewan Kennedy reeled off four race wins after losing to Pollitt in the opening heat. Northern League Division 2 match result Astley & Tyldesley 60 Edinburgh 89 A&T: Reece Pollitt 19, George Hughes 9, Ciaran Collins 9, Max Evans 8 (1), Matthew Snell 7, Ron Makin 5, Joe Quarmby 2, Melissa Boylin 1. Astley & Tyldesley finally got a win in the Division 3 match. There were two excellent races when Max Evans twice passed Callum Cairney to win heats 5 and 8. Evans raced unbeaten, twice defeating Matthew Snell in the process.
