Sat 22nd June Heckmondwike v Astley & Tyldesley Heckmondwike

A&T riders had a torrid journey to Heckmondwike, delayed after an accident on the M62, meant little preparation time. On a very hot sunny afternoon, A&T got off to a poor start, falling 6 points behind after just two races. The deficit was still 6 points at the interval, with Luke Jamson A&T's only race winner when he teamed up with Danny Hughes for a 7-3 in heat 6 over Darren Kent and Richard Wells. A&T improved dramatically after the interval, with the Luke Jamson / Joe Allen bagging a 7-3 in heat 9 over Richard Wells / Laura Watson, to reduce the deficit to 2 points. However, several fine passes by Adam Watson and Jake Wood stopped A&T from getting the heat wins they desperately needed to take the lead. The next three heats were all drawn, before the Reece Pollitt / Joe Allen pair took a 6-4 over Darren Kent / Richard Wells in heat 13 to level the scores. A great gate from grid 3 by Paul Graham, saw him round Jake Wood to join Luke Jamson for a 7-3 heat win, to put A&T in front for the first time. Heckmondwike lined up on inside grids for the last heat, needing a 7-3 to force a draw. Pawel Idziorek made a trademark lightning start from grid 3 to take the win, but Adam Phillips gated over Darren Kent to get the 2nd place necessary for A&T to secure a narrow 76-74 win.

A&T really had to dig deep to fight back from being behind for most of the match, to snatch a late dramatic win. Apart from Danny Hughes, impressive in his first two races but faded with three last places, the A&T riders stepped up a gear in the second half, providing five of the seven race winners. Luke Jamson was in terrific form, losing only to maximum man Pawel Idziorek in heat 3. A&T just proved to have a marginally more solid scoring team than Heckmondwike and that proved decisive, on a dry and sandy track.
