It was a brilliant day's cycle speedway racing at a hot and sunny Gin Pit on Saturday, as Astley & Tyldesley hosted three British Club Championship events, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Astley. Astley & Tyldesley teams took podium places by finishing 3rd in each of the main finals. In the Womens Final, A&T's 14 years old Emily Burgess turned in a fantastic performance to be the meeting's top scorer, with 15 points, beaten just once in the match, despite racing against senior opposition. A&T's other riders were all new recruits from other cycling disciplines and it was a great performance by the new team to take 3rd place in the Women's Final. Leicester won the title for an incredible 13th successive year, finishing ahead of Poole. After a bright start with two race wins in the opening four races in the Veterans Final, A&T fell behind to finish in 3rd place. Two gate exclusions put paid to A&T's attempts to beat Birmingham for second place. All five Leicester riders dropped a single point apiece, as they retained the Veterans trophy. Veterans British Club Championship Final result: Leicester 59 Birmingham 43 Astley & Tyldesley 36 Leicester: Craig Marchant 15, Norman Venson 11, Mark Whitehead 11, Dave Frith 11, Dave Hemsley 11. Birmingham: Mark Winwood 15, Carl Winwood 12, Steve Hodgkinson 9, Paul Timms 7. A&T: Mark Grantham 11, Steve Harris 9, Paul Graham 8, Mick Knowles 4, Mark Brundrett 4. Referee: Ben Higham (Stockport). A&T's 'A' pairing of Emily Burgess and Melissa Boylin were joint winners of the u-16 Girls Semi-Final 1 match, finishing level with Exeter on 36 points, for both teams to qualify for the u-16 Girls A Final. Emily was in brilliant form, unbeaten by an opponent in all six races in the semi-final and again in the Final. Despite her best efforts, it was Exeter who won the Final, with Rosie Tidball beating Maddie Saunders of Poole 'A' in a run-off, after both teams had scored 34 points, with A&T finishing 3rd on 30. A&T's 'B' pairing of Erin Corrigan and Jacqui Kinsey were eliminated in the u-16 Girls Semi-Final 2 match and finished joint 3rd in the u-16 Girls B Final. u-16 Girls British Club Championship A Final result: Exeter 34 Poole 'A' 34 Astley & Tyldesley 'A' 30 Poole 'B' 22 Exeter: Miah Lang 19 (2), Rosie Tidball 15 (3).
