Sun 28th October | Northern Fours And Junior Grand Prix Round 3 | Bury | |
Round 3 of the Northern Fours League and Grands Prix series was held at Bury on Sunday. After two wet opening rounds, the weather was kinder and riders enjoyed racing on a grippy track on a cool but dry day. The Fours League Group A match was hard fought throughout. Astley & Tyldesley, winners of the opening two rounds, found themeselves in a battle with Hull for third place on the day, whilst Bury and Stockport contested first place on the day. The positions switched, as the teams went off different sets of gate positions. At the end of 16 heats, remarkably, Bury and Stockport finished level on points for the second successive match, this time for 1st place, on 43 points each. Hull and A&T both tied for 3rd place on the day, on 36 points each. Under the competition rules for this season, the 4th placed team in each Group A match is relegated to the Group B match, for the next round, so a run-off was held to determine 3rd place. A&T’s Pawel Idziorek had inflicted the only defeat of the match on Hull’s Andy Angell, in heat 1, on his way to a maximum score. Angell though gained his revenge in the run-off and passed Idziorek, to take the win and secure Hull’s place in next week’s Group A match at Astley. Northern Fours League Round 3 Group A match: Bury 43 Stockport 43 Hull 36 Astley & Tyldesley 36 Bury: Adam Turnbull 12, Will Owens 11, Kaysar Mohammadi 10, Adam Taylor 8, Danny Taylor 2. Hull: Andy Angell 15, Nathan Everett 12, Jack Lister 6, Dan Teal 3. Stockport: Ben Higham 13, Daniel Mason 11, Louis Wright 10, Devon Campbell 9. A&T: Pawel Idziorek 16, Ciaran Collins 9, Mick Knowles 5, Kyle Holland 4, Mark Grantham 2. The Group B match was equally hard fought and closely contested, with just four points separating all three teams at the end of the match. Northumbria repeated their win in the opening round Group B match, to line up in next week’s Group A match. The Vikings opened with two 7-3 heat wins, but Sheffield and Heckmondwike pegged them back and the match went to a last heat decider. Northumbria’s Gavin Parr took the lead, before Heckmondwike’s Lewis Foxley fell as he attempted a dive on the leader. Parr was untroubled after that, to secure the overall result. Sheffield’s Adam Watson raced to a bonus maximum. Northern Fours League Round 3 Group B match: Northumbria 42 Sheffield 40 Heckmondwike 38 Northumbria: Jason Keith 11 (1), Gavin Parr 10 (1), Shane Gray 9, Terry Kirkup 7 (1), Keith Oldham 5 (2).. Referee – Mike Hack. Bizarrely, A&T remain at the top of the Fours League table, after riding matches on three away tracks, but now cannot win the league, due to racing next week on their home track in the Group B match! Northern Fours League standings: Astley & Tyldesley 18.5, Bury 18, Stockport 17, Hull 11.5, Northumbria 10, Sheffield 5, Heckmondwike 4. Astley & Tyldesley took a third convincing series win in the Northern Junior League match (scores from all individual grands prix, except the Division 1 category). A&T pair Duncan Whalley and Aiden Green both raced unbeaten in the u-10s match. Stockport’s Ewan Ferreira, Edinburgh’s James Foxley and A&T’s Tom Morrissey all scored 14 points in the u-13s event. Bury's Kaysar Mohammadi again top scored in the u-16s category, on 13 points. Bury’s Eryk Motala was the only u-19 rider present, so raced against the Division 2 riders, with scores subsequently adjusted. Heckmondwike’s Darren Kent made his bow as a Division 2 rider and raced to a maximum score. A&T’s Emily Burgess won three of her four races in the Women’s match. Sheffield's Adam Watson top scored in the Division 1 match.
