Sun 31st July | European Championships | Astley & Tyldesley | |
Astley & Tyldesley hosted their biggest promotional event in their 32 years history, with the staging of the 14th ICSF European Cycle Speedway Championships, at Gin Pit, over the weekend. 13 matches, 264 races, were staged over the three days, in a mix of wet, slippery conditions as the rain came down on Saturday, to a fast, grippy track in hot sunshine on Sunday. England won both the European Nations Cups on Saturday evening. It was a comfortable 97-82 win over Poland in the Junior match, sponsored by Express IT, but the Open match, sponsored by SP Sports Event management, was a much closer and extremely hard fought affair. England edged out Poland by a single point, with Wales third. Final score: England 63 Poland 62 Wales 45 Ireland 24. Four Individual Finals were held on Sunday, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Astley, with the new champions being: Jakub Sawinski (Torun & Poland) - Junior; Lukasz Nowacki (Horspath & Poland) - Veterans; Fryderyka Wojciechowska (Torun & Poland) - Women; Ben Mould (Horspath & Wales) - Open. A&T were well represented in the Championships. John White was a member of the victorious England Junior team, and he won two of his three races, scoring 9 points. John also qualified for the Junior Individual Final and he finished in joint 7th place, after scoring 12 points. Steve Harris qualified for the Veterans Individual Final, where he was placed 11th, on 10 points. Two A&T riders came through the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals of the Open Individual Championships, to qualify for the Final. Reece Pollitt scored 13 points, to finish in 7th place, whilst Pawel Idziorek scored 11 points, to finish in joint 8th place. The Gin Pit track record, which had stood for five years, was beaten on Friday, when Dawid Bas, of Wroclaw and Poland, set up a new time of 40.04 seconds, over 4 laps. |
