Sun 21st May | Heckmondwike v Astley & Tyldesley | Heckmondwike | |
It was another day of mixed fortunes for Astley & Tyldesley, in their North & Scotland League fixture on a dry, slippery track at a hot and sunny Heckmondwike, on Sunday. Fielding a team of riders all aged 16 and under, A&T were always up against it, with Heckmondwike having six experienced Veterans on their team. Nevertheless, a gallant effort by A&T saw them restrict Heckmondwike to a 5 points lead after heat 10, before conceding two late 7-3s. Charlie Burgess won heat 1, but fell in his next race, and a hand injury sustained in that fall saw him pull out of two later races. Duncan Whalley narrowly lost out to the Pat Beacock/ Stuart Hardaker pairing in heat 3, before racing unbeaten afterwards. However, the undoubted star of the match was 12 years old Frank White, who won his first four races in fine style, before losing to Darren Kent in heat 13. Kent was earlier beaten twice by White and also suffered a gate exclusion in heat 6. A&T's impressive youngsters provided the race winner in nine of the fifteen heats, but on the other hand, A&T riders ran a last place in fourteen of the fifteen heats.
