Astley & Tyldesley's Emily Burgess rode brilliantly to take the silver medal in the European Women's Individual Final at Torun, Poland on Sunday. After a second place to Kesgrave's Lily Parr first time out, Emily reeled off three race wins, including one over Poland's World Champion, Zuzia Klett. Emily started off grid 4 last time out, and finished 3rd in the race behind the Sheffield pair of Laura Watson and Lizzie Rigley. This result meant that four riders tied for first place on 17 points. In the run-off, Poole's British Champion, Maddie Saunders, drew the favourable grid 1, Klett 2, Burgess 3, Parr 4. Klett and Burgess were first into turn 1, with Klett having the inside line to lead into turn 3. The Pole raced away to take the title, finishing narrowly ahead of Burgess, with Parr third. Well done Emily! That was a magnificent performance. One gold medal and two silver medals from the last three international finals is a great achievement. In the Junior Final, after a slow start, John White took two race wins, including one over eventual winner, Southampton's Leon Penketh. John came down in a clash whilst leading his last race. John's final total of 13 points saw him finish in 7th place. Leon Penketh won the title, with 18 points. The day's other finals saw former Astley & Tyldesley rider, Pawel Kozlowski, of Gniezno, win the Veterans Final, with Birmingham's Ben Mould retaining the Open title. |
