The previous year’s facility improvements enabled A&T
to stage a British individual Championship for the first time. There was
further success, as Danny Hughes became the first A&T rider to win a British
Individual title, when he won the u-13 Final, with a 20 points maximum
score. A&T provided all three riders who made up the Ireland team in the
World Junior
Cup Final, at Ipswich. The riders put in a terrific effort to tie with
Poland for 3rd place, before Phil Moreton was beaten in a controversial
run-off. Phil went on to become the first A&T rider to race in a World
Junior Individual Final. A&T also paid host to the Australian tourists, when
staging a Junior International Fours event at Gin Pit.
The Phillips family joined the A&T club and for the first time, the club had
a solid looking 1st team, but this wasn’t reflected in results. A&T finished
5th out of 6 teams in the British League North Division 1 and 3rd out of 4
teams in the Manchester League Division 1. Phil Moreton was both top scorer,
with 351 points, and top of the race averages, on 2.97.
The juniors had another successful season, finishing 2nd in the British
League North Junior League (out of 6 teams), 2nd in the Manchester League
Division 2 (out of 4 teams) and runners-up in the British League North
Junior Cup Final. The team slipped to 4th in the British League North
Combination Division (out of 6 teams).
