Members of the Astley & Tyldesley Miners' Welfare / CTA Direct Cycle Speedway Club are celebrating this week after receiving a grant of £5000 from the National Lottery's Awards for All programme.

The grant will allow the club to purchase ten new racing cycles and a storage cabin, as well as funding two club coaches to be trained to British Cycling's Level 2 Club Coach standard. This will enable the club to continue recruiting and developing new and local talent for the Astley & Tyldesley club, as well as assisting British Cycling with their Talent Team development, when their members use the Gin Pit track as part of the World Class Start Sprint Training programme.

Club spokesman Mike Hack said "We're delighted to receive this award. For a group such as ours, this grant is a large sum of money and will make a significant contribution to our club development. It will benefit many young people for many years to come. We've worked very hard to develop this project, with fellow club official Steve Mills responsible for making the successful application. Now we've got the money, it's time for the real work to start and implement our ambitious training programme."
