With less than a month to go to the World Championships, two more countries
have announced their squads for the World Team Cup. Holland will be led by the
vastly experienced Jon Koudijs and Cody Vogel, who will be making their first
appearances at Astley & Tyldesley since racing for Hilversum in an epic tour
match back in 1991. Young flyer Martin Ijkema is also in the squad, which is
completed by Tom de Ruyter, with veteran manager Johan Koudijs on stand by.
Ireland manager Martin Gamble has decided to stick with the squad that raced at
Newport in last month's Home International. Therefore, the squad consists of:
Gary Colby (Captain - Great Blakenham), Tom Doyle (Bury), Phil Widdas
(Birmingham), Kevin Lowey (Poole) and Phil Hemming (Sandwell).
The World Championships will consist of a three day feast of Cycle Speedway
racing over the weekend 1st - 3rd August, at both the Astley & Tyldesley and
Bury tracks. Individual Qualifying Rounds will take place at both tracks on the
Friday, with the action concentrated at Astley on the Saturday, featuring more
Individual Qualifying Rounds and the World Team Cup Final. Bury will host the
racing on the Sunday which will see the Individual Semi-Finals held and the
World Individual Final concluding the weekend's racing.
