Astley & Tyldesley hosted Round 2 of the multi-disciplinary North West Youth League series, at the new Gin Pit cycle speedway track on Saturday. The new track held up superbly in the rainy conditions, with the youngsters, most of whom were new to the cycle speedway discipline, enjoying themselves immensely. Southport CC's Daniel Cosgrove won the u-8s category, winning all his qualifying races and final. Astley & Tyldesley's former British u-8's Grand Prix champion, John White, won all his qualifying races and the 'A' final. Morgan Williams, of the Salt Aire Cog Set, impressed on his first go at cycle speedway, losing only to White. John White set the fastest time for the 3 laps races, for u-8s and u-10s, clocking 35.57 seconds, when winning the 'A' final. The u-12s event saw Ethan Grimshaw, of Eastlands Velo, top the qualifying scores with 15 points. Ethan held on to win a very competitive final race, as the rain came down heavily, narrowly holding off a strong challenge from Erin Corrigan, of Mossley CRC. With just two u-16 riders signing on, the qualifying races for the u-14s and u-16s were combined, with the riders then racing in their respective age category finals. Three riders joint top scored in the qualifiers, with Astley & Tyldesley pair Max Evans and Ciaran Collins losing once to each other and Mossley CRC's Tyler Koch losing only to Evans. Max Evans won the u-14s 'A' final, beating Tyler Koch and Melissa Boylin, of Bolton Hot Wheels, in the fast time of 44.42 seconds. Ciaran Collins won the u-16s final and set up a new track record for 4 laps, 44.40 seconds, when winning heat 3 of the qualifying match.
